Yesterday during a visit to P.S. 1 in Sunset Park, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that fifteen public schools in New York City, including P.S. 1 in Sunset Park, will be adopting ‘Meatless Mondays,’ a global movement to get people to eat more fruits and vegetables, and consume less meat, to live longer, and healthier lives and to promote a healthy planet.
Institutions like The World Health Organization have declared processed meat to be a carcinogen, the Harvard School of Public Health has done studies and found that those who consume red meat tend to live shorter lives, and are more likely to be afflicted with cardiovascular disease, and it has been cited that animal agriculture is a big contributor to global climate change.
The ‘Meatless Monday’ program in these NYC public schools will begin next spring.
